Macauley Honors College

Several years ago Jane Modoono and I both visited a new engineering school, Olin, just outside of Boston. Besides the innovative curriculum, which was being assisted by some of the nation’s most prestigious science and engineering universities such as MIT, Olin was also intriguing because it offered all students four years of free tuition. Given the unique nature of the college we did not feel that it was an option which would work for all students. It was however, one which many of our students may not have known about.

A couple of weeks ago Dr. Modoono and I met with the Dean of the Macauley Honors College of CUNY. While Macauley is not an option for everyone, it is, like Olin, another option worth considering.

What is the Macauley Honors College? CUNY, the City University of New York, has 23 campuses. Seven of these are considered the flagship institutions. The Macauley Honors College is a special, highly competitive program spread across those seven institutions for high level students. Students who are accepted into Macauley are accepted into both a specific CUNY campus and into Macauley which is a city-wide program.

In total there are currently 1300 Macauley Honors College students city-wide. In addition to access to all courses and programs at their home institution, Macauley students have access to special seminars and programs run under auspices of Macauley.

Tuition for Macauley Honors College students is free. Furthermore, Macauley honors students are eligible to receive a grant of $7500 to study abroad or to defray living expenses during an unpaid internship related to an area of particular interest.
