During our regular Sunday evening visits my brother and I engage in lively political discussions as we are on the opposite sides of the political spectrum. But not this year. We are voting in lockstep. Both of us have been disappointed with our political parties so we have decided to research the candidates and vote based on our shared morals and values and current economic climate.
After my research, I am supporting Jack Martins for State Senate. Jack Martins has been mayor of the village of Mineola for eight years. From the people I know residing in Mineola and the many lawn signs displaying their support for Mayor Martins, I know he has been a popular mayor in his community. In a climate of tax bailouts, enormous budget deficits and large job losses, electing someone who is fiscally responsible is the common sense response. Jack Martins has passed a balanced budget every year he has been Mayor by cutting spending across the board. Increases in Mineola’s property taxes were less than $42 a year. Since moving to Roslyn Heights 22 years ago my taxes have nearly tripled. These cost increases make it prohibitive for our children to be able to move back to Long Island as adults.
To me, the choice is clear. Mayor Jack Martins has a proven track record. As my brother said during one of our recent political discussions, we are not Democrats or Republicans, we are patriots and we are here to hold our elected officials accountable.
I hope you will join me in electing Jack Martins for State Senate on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
