The Roslyn, Herricks, and East Williston Adult Ed program offers many opportunities. Some of the courses are unique and inspiring. A new course, Women of New York, has historian and guide Art Zuckerman taking participants on an “armchair tour” around the Island of Manhattan where they will learn of the histories of some of the most influential and creative women of New York. This two-hour lecture on March 11 is definitely not for women only.
Foundations of Astronomy includes the topics: scale of the cosmos – the sky; cycles of the moon; origin of modern astronomy; Newton, Einstein and gravity; light and telescopes; sun and family of stars; life history of stars; galaxies; solar system; and life on other worlds. The class features lecture, media presentation, and the use of telescope provided by the instructor and begins March 7 running over the course of six Thursdays.
There are still openings in the Art Museum Tour series that offers a unique opportunity to see the important art shows of the season at New York’s galleries and museums with Fanshien Mellis, a highly respected and knowledgeable art lecturer as your guide. A luxury bus takes you into Manhattan for five different excursions beginning in April.
Other creativity inspiring courses include Drawing & Painting, a class that runs on Tuesday afternoons and welcomes all ability levels. Clay Sculpture, on Tuesday afternoons, will introduce you to the basic principles of working with clay and will enable you to create your own masterpiece. Crochet takes place Tuesday mornings and will teach you the stitches to make a scarf, granny squares, baby blanket or poncho. You will also learn to read instructions. Let’s Knit is offered Wednesday in the mornings or in the evenings and is valuable whether you’ve had experience knitting or are picking up the needles for the first time.
Learn or brush up on your Spanish or Italian. Take a computer course. If you know how to do email, you are ready for the intermediate Computer Literacy A to Z class, which is offered Monday daytime or Monday evenings. Introduction to Microsoft Office is available for beginners on Monday evenings or for intermediate level on Thursday evenings.
Exercise is always a wonderful way to improve your health. Try something new such as Core & Balance Combo, which is balance-targeted exercises to strengthen your core and abs, blended with elements of capoeira, a Brazilian-inspired system especially suited to building balance and core. This class is a non-strenuous approach to improving your balance that will run on Thursday mornings. For a different kind of workout class there is Bollywood Lifestyles a fun, calorie-burning class using Bollywood music. The class, a perfect blend of Zumba, bhangra and Bollywood dancing, takes place on Wednesday evenings at Herricks Community Center. Also at Herricks is Basketball with openings available on Tuesday evenings.
Register early as many courses have limited enrollment. Registration forms can be sent in via mail or fax. In person registration is between 10 a.m. - noon on weekdays. Instructions are on the form. A $5 registration fee must be included. Registrations will not be taken over the phone.
