Calling his new establishment “the launch of my crusade to change the way in which America eats,” William Jack Degel has opened Jack’s Shack, a new restaurant located at 671-A Glen Cove Ave. in Glen Head.
On Friday, Jan. 20, the restaurant held its grand opening, one attended by Nassau County Executive Edward I. Mangano.
Degel said Jack’s Shack would be “a revolutionary concept in the delivery and presentation of fast food,” with diners enjoying “healthy ‘all natural’ consumption from identified, quality sources and making wise diet choices: no steroids, no chemicals, no antibiotics, no hormones, no nitrates, no preservatives.” Further, two-thirds of the facility, Degel said, has been constructed “green” from re-claimed, re-cycled materials and equipment.
Degel said that the Glen Head location is the first one in Nassau County. However, it only represents the beginning of a Jack’s Shack presence in Long Island. Degel said three more such restaurants are planned for Nassau County in 2012. “Jack’s Shack, Glen Head is the result of my three year investment in money, effort, research, and development,” Degel said, adding that he has lived in the area with his family for more than a decade now and that was a major reason why he decided to launch Jack’s Shack in Glen Head. “I wanted to try to do this concept years ago,” Degel told The Roslyn News, speaking of an all natural-style establishment. “It’s a great project.”
Degel said he is looking for support from all the surrounding villages on the North Shore. “We want to change the way people eat and the way their children eat on a daily basis,” he said. More information can be found on jacksshack.com.
Degel has had success in the restaurant business before. Seventeen years ago, he established Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, which now has three locations in the highly competitive world of New York City eateries. Degel is looking for more of that same success in Glen Head and throughout Nassau County.

A petition is currently circulating throughout East Hills, one that expresses concern about residential development and the loss of what it calls “numerous” healthy trees.
East Hills resident Richard Brummel is circulating the petition. Brummel told The Roslyn News that the representation of like-minded residents at a recent public hearing on the village’s tree laws inspired him to start up the petition. He added that up to four-dozen signatures were secured after several hours canvassing over a recent weekend.
