On Wednesday, April 22, the proprietors of Active Kidz, a birthday and sports facility located on Forest Drive, will meet before the Village of East Hills Board of Zoning Appeals concerning an application for a variance to expand their current facility. The meeting will begin at 8:00 p.m. The BZA meets at Village Hall, 209 Harbor Hill Rd.

Active Kidz hopes to expand its current site from 8,400 sq. ft. to 20,000 sq. ft.

According to Andy Oelbuam, the proposed expansion will include a new interactive Toddler room for inflatables and a themed state of the art laser tag arena. Plans were filed in September and approvals are still pending with the Village of East Hills.

"We are hopeful that the Village will grant approvals allowing this Project to go forward," Oelbaum said. "The expanded facility has been eagerly anticipated by our customers and would benefit the community by enabling us to hire more employees and give local food vendors increased business. In this economy when there is an opportunity to actively participate in creating jobs we are hopeful that the Board will support the project,"

There is currently 67,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space next door to Active Kidz that will be vacant this spring. Active Kidz hopes to take advantage of the empty space to expand and improve their own facility. Active Kidz has been part of the East Hills business community for three and a half years.

Lise Oelbaum claims that the community is in favor of the expansion plan. She reiterated that the expansion would help to create jobs in the area. She also said that keeping Active Kidz in East Hills would also prevent local residents from having to travel to Syosset or Plainview for the amenities that Active Kidz already offers. The expansion plans, she added, would not only benefit local youngsters; it would make Active Kidz a place for adults of all ages to use and enjoy.
