On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the City of Glen Cove hosted the 82nd Anniversary Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing Competition. The Glen Cove High School gymnasium was packed with over 300 spectators who were there to see the 10 Novice Division bouts ranging in weights from 132 to 152 pounds.

The Glen Cove Boxing Club and the City of Glen Cove Parks and Recreation Department were proud to sponsor this event. The night began with five exciting fights, followed by two special presentations inside the ring by Glen Cove City Councilman Sean Dwyer on behalf of Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi, along with Parks and Recreation Director Darcy Belyea and Glen Cove Boxing Club President Frank Pena. The trio honored John Labate with a citation for his hard work and dedication to the Glen Cove Boxing Club and the youth of Glen Cove.

All of the remaining proceeds from the event will go towards the newly opened Glen Cove Boxing Club facility. The club re-opened in October and has been a place for the cityís youth, or anyone interested in pursuing the sport of boxing, to call home. The Glen Cove Boxing Club is open to all Glen Cove residents at no charge and to non-residents for a small monthly fee. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 6 to 8 p.m. and by appointment on weekends.
