The Roslyn Bulldogs made history last Saturday night by winning the school's first ever Class ABC-I Nassau County title.
The Bulldogs rallied from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat top seeded South Side, 69-61.
Trailing 53-51, Roslyn outscored South Side by 10 points in the final frame to pull off the convincing victory.
The Bulldogs now advance to the Long Island title game. They will play the winner of the East Hampton-Huntington contest on Friday, March 13 at 5:00 p.m. at SUNY-Farmingdale.
Senior star George Beamon led the way with 33 points. He was assisted by Dan Lip who knocked down 16 points, and Jordan Richman who had 12 points. Nearly all of Lip's scoring came from the three-point line. Playing under a pressure packed situation, Lip drilled home five three-pointers. Beamon had three three-pointers, along with eight field goals and eight free throws.
As they did in their semifinal win against Westbury, Roslyn defeated a team with a better win-loss percentage. Going into the tournament, South Side was the top seed with a 17-4 record overall and a 11-1 mark in conference play. Similarly, Westbury was 18-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action, while Roslyn finished the regular season with a 15-5 overall record and a 7-5 mark in conference play.
But neither Westbury nor South Side could overcome Roslyn's brilliant team play or their intense desire.
"We have what's called togetherness, spirit, and unity," said a happy Head Coach Jeff Risener, after the win.
Risener hailed not only the play, but also the leadership of George Beamon.
"George has a good work ethic," Risener added. "He set the bar very high. He leads by example and is a wonderful player to coach. George is the first one to practice and the last one to leave. He set the tone and as a result, the team played hard and played together."
The Bulldogs advanced to the championship game by defeating Westbury in an equally thrilling overtime road win, 71-64. Playing on the road, the Bulldogs held off a fourth quarter rally to send the game into overtime, where they prevailed by a seven-point margin.
Once again, George Beamon was top scorer with 31 points, while adding 13 rebounds. Three other Bulldogs scored in double figures: Jordan Richman (15), Jake Ansel (13), and Dan Lip (10.) Richman also had a career-high 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Lip chipped in with five assists.
Roslyn cruised into the semifinal game with a convincing 67-52 Feb. 17 home win over Floral Park.
Beamon led the way with 32 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds. He was assisted by Jordan Richman who had a season-high 20 points, plus 12 rebounds.
