For the second playoff game in a row, Roslyn Bulldogs basketball coach Jeff Risener went with just five men throughout an entire game. And for the second consecutive time, it worked as the Bulldogs pulled off their most impressive win of the season, defeating Westbury in a thrilling overtime road win, 71-64.
With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the Nassau County Class A final against South Side High School. The championship game will be played this Saturday, Feb. 28 at the SUNY-Old Westbury gymnasium. Tip-off time is 5:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs had to be considered underdogs in the semifinal contest. Not only was it on the road, but also the game was against a team that had a slightly better won-loss percentage. However, the Bulldogs held off a fourth quarter rally to send the game into overtime, where they prevailed by the comfortable seven-point margin.
Once again, George Beamon led the Bulldogs with 31 points, while adding 13 rebounds. Three other Bulldogs scored in double figures: Jordan Richman (15), Jake Ansel (13), and Dan Lip (10.) Richman also had a career-high 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Lip chipped in with five assists.
After trading baskets for an 11-11 score at the end of the first quarter, Westbury outscored Roslyn in the second frame, 17-14 to gain a 28-25 halftime lead.
With the season on the line, the Bulldogs showed true grit. They rebounded with a terrific third quarter, outscoring Westbury 20-12 to take a 45-20 lead going into the final frame. Westbury mounted a comeback of their own, one that allowed them to tie the score. But in the overtime period, Roslyn outscored Westbury, 11-4 for the win.
Roslyn cruised into the semifinal game with a convincing 67-52 Feb. 17 home win over Floral Park.
