The 2008-2009 school budget passed by 1,423 yes votes to 677 no votes. Proposition 2 was also passed by a vote of 1,412 to 581, allowing us to establish a Capital Reserve Fund for the long-term maintenance of our schools. Amy Beyer will maintain her Trustee position while Mary Kolkhorst has been elected to the board, replacing Trustee Peter Vollmer who did not seek re-election. We thank Peter for his many years of dedicated service to the board and the North Shore community.
I would like to sincerely thank the North Shore community for coming out on May 20 to cast your ballots in the 2008-2009 school budget vote and election of trustees. It is gratifying to know that our residents support the kind of education that has resulted in our district's outstanding reputation for preparing students to think critically and to creatively solve problems, as they continue their pursuit of learning.
I offer my gratitude to our staff who worked so hard to maintain responsible fiscal management practices and effective oversight while creating a budget that preserves the quality of our programs. Thanks to all of the community members who have volunteered their support to benefit our students in so many ways-from parents who offer their time in our schools to citizens and community leaders who have taken the time to come to board of education budget meetings, town meetings and the many community coffees that were held throughout the year. I would also like to thank all the residents who took the time to call or write with questions about the budget and the other proposition on the ballot this year. I appreciate your efforts to make an informed decision.
With your continued support, we are committed to working harder than ever in our efforts to strive to offer our students deep and meaningful learning opportunities that not only foster strong habits of mind, but also support the development of critical thinking skills. Additionally, we look forward to continuing to build upon the vibrant school-community partnership that exists here at North Shore, a partnership based on communication, cooperation, trust....and always putting the needs of our children first.
