Town of North Hempstead Town officials have added another group of local women to the May W. Newburger Women's Roll of Honor today. The women selected this year represent both public and personal contributions to the various communities throughout North Hempstead.
Guest speaker Marie-France Pochna reminded the audience of how creativity opens up the world of possibilities. A European leader in the world of fashion, Ms. Pochna is an award-winning author who has written biographies on several key players in the fashion industry. Born and educated in France, Ms. Pochna holds a law degree and is a professor in Paris and London.
In addition to Ms. Pochna, our breakfast audience enjoyed a poetry reading by Shirley Romaine who has been a featured highlight of the Women's Roll of Honor Breakfast since its inception in 1994.
Minnie Gibbs and Addy Gordon, both of Roslyn, are two of the 17 Honorees of 2008.
A native of South Carolina, Ms. Gibbs has lived in Roslyn Heights for 47 years. Of particular note is her commitment to children. Minnie served for more than 18 years as president of the Roslyn Day Care Center. Ms. Gibbs is a life member of the North Shore Branch of the NAACP and trustee of North Hempstead's Jones Manor on the Sound Adult Home.
For more than 50 years, Addy Gordon has given her time, talents, and resources to numerous charities, organizations, and activities in the community and the nation. Beneficiaries of her generosity include the United Jewish Appeal, American Cancer Society, public radio and television, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, Southern Poverty Law Center, the ACLU, Amnesty International, the Sierra Club, and the National Organization for Women.
