The Wheatley School's Varsity Girls Indoor Track team and Varsity Boys Basketball team have both been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence in its Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program.
This program, which was initiated by NYPHSAA 17 years ago, recognizes athletic teams from across New York State for the exemplary academic performance of its team members.
Based upon a composite of the grade point averages among team members, team champions are selected for each varsity sport from those high schools across New York State that enter the competition.
The Wheatley School's Varsity Girls Indoor Track team achieved an average of 99.611 for the 2007-2008 season. In 2005, the team achieved an average of 99.086, which earned the distinction of New York State Champions for the Scholar Athletes Team Recognition Award competition. This year's team is hopeful it will also earn the prestigious championship team award.
The Wheatley School's Varsity Boys Basketball team achieved an average of 96.659. Last year, the team achieved an average of 96.32, which was the highest boys' basketball team academic average in New York State. This significant achievement earned the team the honor of New York State Champions for the Scholar Athletes Team Recognition Award competition.
