After nearly eight months of investigations, Nassau County detectives have arrested a suspect in a fatal accident that occurred in Roslyn Heights on July 6, 2007.

On Feb. 19, detectives announced the arrest of Mayer Sadian, 19, of Roslyn Heights in the connection with the death of Dr. Jeffrey Siegel of Old Westbury.

Sadian was arrested at Jamaica Coliseum Mall in Jamaica, Queens and arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

At the arraignment, Sadian was ordered to be held without bail. Sadian has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Sadian has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

After the arrest, a flurry of stories came out, with Michael Dowd, Sadian's attorney maintaining that his client had been brought to the police soon after the July 2007 accident. According to published reports, Dowd also said that he had made calls and letters to the district attorney's office.

In addition, Det. Lt. Michael Fleming told the media that an investigation is continuing, which hinted that there might be more arrests in the future.

The arrest of Mayer Sadian culminates the tragic series of events that took place last July. On the evening of July 6, Dr. Siegel was on his way to Attilio's Pizzeria at the corner of Mineola Avenue and Elm Street when he was hit by what police later described as a speeding car at 8:13 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene later that evening.

Immediately, police began looking for a gold Honda Accord that witnesses said struck Dr. Siegel. Witnesses spotted part of the license plates on the vehicle, which they identified as having the letters DYP or DYB on them.

Later in the month, the homicide squad recovered and identified a 2000 Honda Accord, color tan, bearing New York State passenger registration, DYPS130. This, according to detectives, was the vehicle wanted for leaving the scene of the July 6 accident.

According to published reports, Sadian lived at the same Roslyn Heights address on Russell Street as the vehicle's owner. He had a series of moving violations on his record, including driving without a license, failing to stop at a stop sign, and disobeying a traffic device, police stated..

Dr. Siegel, a pulmonary specialist and attending physician at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset who also had a practice in Lake Success, lived in Old Westbury with his wife, Louise Spadaro, a cardiologist, and three daughters.

The accident highlighted the dangers of the intersection of Mineola Avenue and Elm Street, and others in that Roslyn Heights neighborhood. According to published reports, residents said that traffic is especially heavy, and walking is perilous, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday when Mineola Avenue is full of local residents all patronizing the restaurants along that thoroughfare.
