Opinion

Next Tuesday, Feb. 12, a significant vote is taking place in Greenvale-and it concerns our Greenvale educational facility. I want to make sure that community residents have all the information they need before they go to the polls.

Specifically, Nassau BOCES is asking county residents to approve the expenditure of up to $14.9 million to renovate and expand its school building at 21 Chestnut Street. There's no additional cost to taxpayers for the renovation; we have been putting money away in a capital fund for several years to fund this work. We are only asking for permission to spend existing appropriations.

Those who are familiar with the school know that the property is relatively small - only 1.2 acres. The renovation will increase the "footprint" of the school, while leaving enough room for staff parking in the existing paved area.

More importantly, for our Greenvale neighbors, the rehabilitation of this building will include a small gym and a meeting room. For the first time, we will be able to welcome community use of our facility.

I can assure you that the renovation is much needed. The building currently houses our Alternative Learning Program (ALP), a special education high school for teenagers who are academically capable, but have difficulty with peer and adult relationships. Classrooms, computer labs and professional office spaces will be added to accommodate a growing demand for services, espcially for youngsters who have autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger's Syndrome.

Anyone who is a resident of Nassau County, at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen may vote. One of our five polling locations is conveniently located at the Greenvale School. It will be open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Feb. 12. I encourage you to come and to tell your friends and neighbors about this referendum.

If you have questions, please visit our website at www.nassauboces.org or call the Office of Information at 396-2208.

George Farber

President, BOCES
