Julie Dumper, former longtime resident of Roslyn, died peacefully of old age on Jan. 4, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Laura Seitz, in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. She was 101 years of age.

She was born in London, England in 1906 to an American mother, Laura Clarke Secretan and a Swiss father, Adolph Secretan. She was educated in England and graduated from Kings College, the University of London. In 1921, she immigrated to the United States.

She taught history and French for 35 years in the Raysin School and the Hewitt School in New York City and the Green Vale School in Old Brookville, retiring in 1962. In 1930, she married Henry Dumper, a New York City architect and they had two daughters, Laura Seitz and Marie Ferguson. Her husband died in 1988 after 58 years of marriage. In 1995, she moved to Croton-on-Hudson.

She moved to Roslyn in 1940 and always took an active part in the community. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Roslyn, Clark Garden, Planting Fields, the Rhododendron Society of New York State, The Sea Cliff Yacht Club, the Bryant Library and other community institutions.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Seitz, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her ashes were interred at Trinity Church at the same time as those of her daughter, Marie Ferguson, on Jan. 12.
