As motorists might have noticed by now, the scheduled nighttime closures on the Roslyn Viaduct, originally set to begin on Jan. 14 and to last for approximately one week, have not taken place.
Instead, officials with the New York State Department of Transportation said that the closures have been "tentatively" re-scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 21, weather permitting and will also last throughout the week.
DOT officials only said that the Jan. 14 closures were postponed because some of the preparation work could not be done prior to that date.
The closures are needed, DOT officials said, to transport the new bridge segments over the viaduct to the worksite.
During these nightly closures of the viaduct, all traffic will be detoured through Old Northern Boulevard between midnight and 5 a.m. Westbound traffic will be detoured at the Witte Lane exit ramp to Bryant Avenue and continue through Old Northern Boulevard. Traffic on Bryant Avenue and all other local traffic will also follow this detour. Eastbound traffic on the Viaduct will be detoured to Old Northern Boulevard through Mineola Avenue.
Motorists will be warned of these lane closures via signs posted in advance of the bridge in both directions, but are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.
