East Hills resident Robert L. Feinsod was honored recently for his bravery and heroism during World War II. Feinsod, an 87-year old Army veteran, fought in the Battle of the Bulge where on several occasions, he rushed desperately needed supplies through enemy lines. These supplies which included weapons, ammunition, medical items and protective clothing, were used to re-arm the 101st Airborne Division, allowing them to prevail against overwhelming German forces.

In appreciation of his service, U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D. -Queens/L.I.) presented Feinsod with an American flag that was flown over the United States Capitol in his honor. The presentation was made during a ceremony in Ackerman's office in Bayside.
Attending the event were Feinsod's wife Kalma and his granddaughter Lyla as well as his cousin Ben Feinsod, sister-in-law Ellen Jacobs and his niece Ruth Wurtzel. Feinsod served as a First Lieutenant with the 717th Airborne Ordnance Company of the 17th Airborne Division where he was Executive Officer and Shop Officer. He was later promoted to Company Commander of the 782nd Airborne Ordinance Company of the 82nd Airborne Division and ultimately served as Captain in the Berlin Occupation Forces.
Feinsod has also served the local government of the Village of East Hills for the past 50 years, including eight years as Deputy Mayor and eight years as Chairman of the Board of Appeals. He is currently an Ad Hoc member of the Board of Appeals.
