The Mineola Chiefs 10-year-old maroon team opened the football season with a solid, all-around team performance, beating Floral Park 22-0.
The offense wa led by the rushing of Ryan Eccher, 6 rushes for 43 yards with a touchdown and extra point, and Andrew Cunningham, 2 rushes for 10 yards also with a touchdown and an extra point. Razzle dazzle was added by Justin Johnson scoring on a 41 yard end around.
The offense was directed by QB Thomas O'Connell and the offensive line of Gavin Dowd, Michael Delio, Lucas Golon, Andrew Hastings and Teddy Capsis.
Special teams played a big role with kickoffs and punts returned by Brian Smith, Anthony Preston and O'Connell giving the Chiefs good field position all game. Kyle Spruill made a touchdown saving tackle on a kickoff to preserve the shutout.
The Mineola defense dominated all game. Matthew Lafaye, John Clancy, Kyle Cunningham, and Zak Chorost kept Floral Park's offense off balance all game.
Early in the first quarter, CB Michael patelano and SMith combined for a tackle in the end zone. The safety gave the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.
