School Budget Discussions Under Way
Recently, the Roslyn School District Board of Education unveiled the Superintendent's Budget for the 2007-08 fiscal year. The budget, which is only a preliminary document, calls for $91,691,381 in total spending, a 7.37 percent increase over the $85,400,446 contained in the approved 2006-07 budget.

Jourdan Urbach Wins State Spirit Award
Jourdan Urbach of Roslyn was named as New York State's high school winner of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring one high school and one middle school winner from each state for their outstanding humanitarian acts. More than 7,500 candidates were reviewed for this award. Jourdan was nominated by the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School in Manhattan at which he is a student, along with being home-schooled and a student at Roslyn High School. Jourdan was chosen for his national musical and philanthropic reputation and his creation of Children Helping Children, which has grown into a major fundraising arm of the national medical community.

Sid Jacobson Barracudas Out Swim Thunderbirds
At their January meet, the Sid Jacobson Barracudas' swim team took an early lead against the Thunderbirds of Manhattan and won by taking more first places with the highest number from the women's 10 and under category. From the opening 200-yard medley relay through the grueling 200-yard freestyle, this group took home eight first-place ribbons with impressive efforts from Caitlin McCormick, Taylor Brooks, Michaela Mahon, Melanie Rosen, Lexi Singer, Marlee Singer, Marisa Struhl and Ruby Viener. In both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relays, the Barracudas easily took first place swimming strong and maintaining the lead. In the men's 11 to 12-age group the following had excellent swims: Andrew Brooks on the butterfly and breast stroke, Greg Rosenthal on the backstroke, Owen Seidman on the breast stroke and Jason Stewart on the freestyle.
