While the memories of a dream season still burn bright, the Wheatley girls soccer team recently received more good news. After completing a season in which the team enjoyed unprecedented success by capturing its first-ever Long Island regional championship and advancing to the New York State championship game, our coach and two players have received state recognition. Coach Paul Paino received New York State Coach-of-the-Year honors, and two seniors, Ashley Kowalczyk and Stephanie Del mistro were named to the All-State soccer team. These honors were awarded by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS).

Coach Paino, a science teacher at the Wheatley School, completed his 22nd season as varsity coach of the girls soccer team. Under his leadership, Wheatley captured its second consecutive Nassau County title this year, while compiling an overall record of 15-6. Paul also coaches varsity baseball at Wheatley.

Ashley, who scored 32 goals this year to establish a single-season scoring record, was named to the All-New York State first team. Stephanie received second team honors. Both girls have been highly recruited and will continue their soccer careers at the collegiate level next year. Ashley is the daughter of Patricia and Mario Kowalczyk, and they reside in Albertson. Stephanie and her parents, Laura and Angelo Del mistro, live in East Williston.
