Under the leadership of longtime coach, Dan Walsh, The Wheatley School's varsity boys' cross-country team captured its fifth consecutive Nassau County Championship, which qualified the team for its fifth straight trip to the New York State cross country championship meet. The run of five consecutive Section 8 championships is unprecedented in the history of Wheatley athletes. Building on the team's successful defense of the Division Championship on Oct. 24, 2006 the Wheatley runners edged perennial rival, Oyster Bay, in the Section 8 championships on Nov. 4. The championship meet was held at Bethpage State Park.
All five of the Wheatley scorers achieved personal best times on the 3.2-mile course. The other top five finishers for Wheatley were seniors Chris Carlin and Jon Pfadenhauer and sophomores Stephen Schwarz and Josh Cooper.
The Wheatley girls cross-country team, which also captured its Division Championship, competed in the Section 8 meet and the team was led by ninth-grader, Michelle Chin. Based on her excellent race, Michelle qualified for the New York State championship meet.
The Wheatley boys team and individual competitor Michelle Chin represented Wheatley and Nassau County in the New York State Cross Country Championships on Nov. 11. The meet was held at Warwick High School located in upstate Orange County. While both the Wheatley boys and girls cross-country teams will each be losing two veteran runners, each team has highly motivated and talented underclassmen to carry on the tradition of excellence for which Wheatley Cross Country is known.
