During the summer months most high school graduates are looking forward to their freshman year of college. This offers each student an opportunity to meet new friends and be away from home for the first time. The summer of 1993 proved no different for Roslyn native Kristin May.
Kristin was not only looking forward to new friends and new adventures but was also looking forward to a new level of athletic achievement.
In the winter of her senior year at Roslyn High School, Kristin signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the Siena College Saints. Siena is nestled away on 164 acres in the beautiful Albany suburb of Loudonville, NY.
Kristin spent the summer prior to her freshman year training like any college athlete; eating right, getting enough sleep and working hard in the gym to prepare for the upcoming season.
When Hank Wysocki, the then-Siena Division I Women's head volleyball coach, signed Kristin he had no idea of the determination, work ethic and athleticism he was going to receive in the fall of 1993.
In the four years that Kristin played for the Saints she led the team to four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships and even led the team to its first NCAA Tournament after an NCAA play-in win over Colgate as well as making it to the NIVC in 1993.
In addition to team accolades Kristin won individual awards and accomplishments that have yet to be surpassed. Kristin ranks first on Siena's all-time charts with 1,464 career kills, and third in games played (419), digs (1,165) and aces (160). She was named MAAC Rookie of the Year in 1993 and MAAC Player of the Year in 1994.
In 1995, she was recognized as one of just 19 Division I student-athletes on the National GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, earning third-team honors. Kristin was a three-time (1994, 1995 and 1996) GTE/CoSIDA Regional selection. As a senior in 1996, Kristin set the Siena single season record for kills per game (3.87 - since broken) and hitting percentage (.351 - for outside hitters). She was named All-MAAC for the third time in her career as a senior. The consummate student-athlete, Kristin graduated with a 3.85 grade point average in psychology.
On Oct. 21, Kristin was inducted into the Siena Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Kristin joins 95 other Siena alumni in this prestigious club, which started in 1964. Following a 3-0 Siena Volleyball win over Rider, friends and family joined Kristin for a reception and induction ceremony. The night unveiled with a few brief remarks by Father Kevin Mackin, president of Siena College, along with John D'Argenio, the schools director of athletics.
Ron Racey, Kristin's former coach, reached the podium and shared some heartfelt words. "Kristin portrayed a determination on and off the court that was followed by the rest of the team." Ron also went on to add, "Kristin changed Siena Volleyball in a way no other athlete can. She gave new meaning to the term student-athlete by exemplifying herself on and off the court."
Kristin, even nine years since graduating, was humble enough to add, "I could not have been the athlete I was in college if not for the support of my family, friends and ultimately my teammates. Volleyball is a team sport and if not for the other girls I never would have had the opportunities to advance so far in my athletic endeavors."
Kristin married her longtime sweetheart, Stephen, in May of 2002 and the couple recently gave birth to their first child, Casey Lorraine. Kristin has been employed for the last five years with Furey, Kerley, Walsh, Matera & Cinquemani P.C. of Seaford were she specializes in medical malpractice and insurance defense.
Kristin continues to compete in the sport, which brought so much excitement to her life, both professionally and semi-professionally.
