(Roslyn High School principal Kevin Scanlon sent the following letter to high school parents and asked that it be shared with readers of The Roslyn News.)

Over the past few years, parents have been informed that non-sanctioned scavenger hunts were taking place as part of "Midnight Madness."

These events have traditionally taken place on the evening of Election Day or around Halloween. Although most activities associated with these events may be considered harmless, there are other aspects, which have exceeded the realm of common decency.

Some of the acts committed during these events are indecent, abusive, sexually inappropriate, and even illegal. I bring this information to your attention once again so that you may discuss and address these issues at home before someone is harmed irreparably.

For your information, the school administration neither endorses nor monitors any scavenger hunt. In addition, there is also a rumor of a planned ski trip occurring in December. Please be aware that, like the Bahamas trip, the school has no involvement with this event. Unfortunately, the school must often deal with the repercussions of the thoughtless actions associated with these activities as the school year progresses.

As a community, we cannot condone activities, which soil our name or lead to physical and emotional harm to anyone. I would encourage that such energies that would be devoted to these activities be channeled to many of the worthwhile causes within our community and elsewhere throughout the world.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance and cooperation with this matter before we pay a horrible price for allowing these activities to continue.

Kevin Scanlon,

Principal, Roslyn High School
