Subpoenas have been issued in an ongoing probe by a Nassau County grand jury for possible building violations in the Town of North Hempstead (TONH).

In recent days, a grand jury has subpoenaed the offices of Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, plus those of Highway Superintendent Thomas Tiernan, Board Member Thomas Dwyer, the Nassau County Board of Elections, and the TONH Democratic Committee.

The subpoenas will investigate the campaign finance records of Kaiman, Dwyer, the board of elections and the TONH Democratic Committee.

The grand jury is also looking into the phone records at Tiernan's office, plus a large number of records at Kaiman's office, including phone logs, e-mails, schedules and office correspondence.

All this is part of an ongoing investigation of the town's building department. That includes determining if campaign contributions by certain developers resulted in their receiving partiality for permits and certificates of completion issued.

Even though prominent TONH officials are now being investigated, the town, in June, began its own probe into certain building projects under its jurisdiction.

That investigation resulted in the suspension of 30 building projects in the town, located in both the Roslyn Heights Country Club subdivision and in New Cassel.

According to published reports, the investigation found that numerous homes in the Roslyn Heights subdivision exceeded town building codes, with seven of them having their certificates of occupancy annulled.

The town also ended a consulting agreement it had with Joe Madden, a former TONH deputy commissioner. In the spring, Madden had resigned that position for work in the private sector.

Joanne Taormina, a spokesman for the TONH, said it would be "inappropriate at this time" for the town to comment on the subpoenas.

Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the DA's office made a similar statement, adding that the ongoing investigation made his office "unable to comment at this time."
