This Monday, Sept. 11, Village of Roslyn Mayor John Durkin will lead a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Ellen B. Ward Memorial Clock Tower in downtown Roslyn.
Other village officials will join Mayor Durkin, including Deputy Mayor Nolan Myerson, Trustee Marshall Bernstein, Trustee Craig Westergard, and Trustee Marta Genovese. The board of trustees encourage Roslyn residents to attend this ceremony as the village honors the heroes and victims of that tragic day.
Throughout the ceremony, flags will be lowered at half-mast. There will be a moment of silence while the Clock Tower tolls its bells at 8:46 a.m., the moment of impact into the World Trade Center and again at 9:03, the time of the second impact.
There will be representatives from the Roslyn Highland and Roslyn Hook and Ladder fire companies, plus those from the Nassau County's Sixth Precinct Police Department.
Among the dignitaries expected to attend are Monsignor Richard Bauhoff, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church; Rabbi Benjamin David, Temple Sinai of Roslyn; Rep. Gary Ackerman; State Senator Michael Balboni; State Assemblyman Charles Lavine; vocalist Susan Hugelmeyer; and the Roslyn High School Trumpeters.
Three Roslyn area residents perished on Sept, 11, 2001: Michael Haub, Firemen Peter Langone, and Policeman Thomas Langone. In honor of these three men, the Clock Tower will ring three times.
"We must be forever mindful of the countless acts of heroism that took place on Sept. 11, 2001," said Mayor Durkin. "We must never forget the innocent victims, their families and the countless men and women who were willing to give everything to save the lives of others."
