Not surprisingly, the sentencing dates for the major figures in the embezzlement scandal continue to be postponed.

On Monday, July 17, both Pamela Gluckin and Debra Rigano were set to be sentenced on grand larceny charges. Thursday, July 27 was to be the sentencing date for former superintendent, Dr. Frank A. Tassone, also for larceny charges.

Now, Tuesday, Sept. 19 is the sentencing date for all three defendants.

In the past, the Nassau County District Attorney's office has claimed that it postponed sentencing dates in order to obtain more monies from the defendants. In addition, Dr. Tassone has reportedly suffered a heart condition, which also postponed sentencing dates. The DA's office gave no reason for the latest delays.

As the postponements continue to drag on throughout the year, the Roslyn School District is receiving more monies in restitution payments.

According to district officials, Dr. Tassone recently delivered a restitution payment totaling $1,041,253. In all, Dr. Tassone has agreed to pay $2 million in restitution monies to the school district.

This comes on the heels of other such payments. Over the past several months, the district has received payments from its former auditing firm, Miller, Lilly, and Pearce; from Pamela Gluckin, and from her son, John McCormick.

The auditing firm paid $900,000 in restitution, while the payments from Ms. Gluckin and McCormick, totaled, respectively, $1,575,023.74 and $166,441.24.

Ms. Gluckin's payment is only part of a whopping $4.358 million judgment that was awarded to the district. In addition, Ms. Rigano must pay $780,000 in restitution to the district, so it appears that the sentencing dates may continue to be postponed.

Either way, the district plans to use restitution monies to pay for a $4.1 million capital improvement plan, one that was approved by voters in the May 16 election.
