Last Thursday night, at Lion's Field in Port Washington, the Roslyn 12 and under Williamsport Little League baseball team faced the Manhasset Little League team for the District 28 championship.
Roslyn beat Port Washington, Williston Park, and Manhasset to finish undefeated in the winner's bracket, winning the three games by a combined score of 21 to 4. The Manhasset team came out of the loser's bracket to have the right to face Roslyn in the Championship Series. Roslyn needed to win one of the two games, the first being played last Wednesday night.
Manhasset fought back from a 6 to 3 deficit with three runs in the 5th inning and the winning run in the bottom of the 6th to force the winner-take-all, decisive final game.
Roslyn jumped ahead with a run in the first as shortstop, John Lanzillotti took advantage of a wild pitch and scored from third with two outs. Manhasset came right back against Roslyn's ace pitcher Patrick Woods with a run in the bottom of the first. Woods, who already had two wins under his belt in the tournament, including a one-hit shutout, got out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning.
Roslyn came right back with three runs in the top of the second inning with good base-running and timely hitting by Jon Peck and Andrew Simon. The 4 to 1 lead would hold up until Manhasset put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After Roslyn left two runners on base in the top of the fifth, Pat Woods was relieved from his pitching duties by Jon Peck in the bottom of the inning.
Roslyn played solid defense in the bottom of the fifth with excellent outfield play, in particular an outstanding, diving catch by Tyler Calinda. After going down in order in the top of the sixth, Roslyn took the field three outs from the Championship. Manhasset's lead-off batter, Ryan Murray worked out a walk. With Murray on first and nobody out, Peck got a strikeout of the second hitter in the inning to set up the moment that was considered by all in attendance to be the defensive play of the tournament. Manhasset's lead-off hitter drove a ball to the right-centerfield gap that had "rbi double" written all over it. Right fielder, Devin Gerzof got an excellent jump on the ball, took the perfect angle toward the ball and snared the ball before it got in the gap to preserve the lead.
With two outs and a man on first, the next batter walked and both runners moved over on a wild pitch, giving Manhasset a second and third situation-the tying run on third and the Championship winning run on second. The moment was tense, but Roslyn was not to be denied as Manhasset's strong number three hitter went down swinging for the third out and Roslyn had its first District Championship in the history of the organization.
The other teams in the district tournament were Albertson, Williston Park, East Williston, Port Washington, and Merillon. Other Roslyn team members included Anthony and Joe Amoroso, Jeremy Diaz, Alex Gubernikoff, Matthew Lerman, Ben Saltzman, Robby Seinfeld, and Matt Sherr. The team was coached by Joey Seinfeld, Michael Wolfe, Andy Sherr, Pat Woods, and David Seinfeld.
