The Bryant Library is sad to announce that longtime Library Friend Fay Leavy passed away on July 12, 2006 at the age of 90. A memorial service in remembrance of Fay will be held in the Helen Glannon Room of the Bryant Library on July 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The family noted that Fay died peacefully and painlessly at home, as she wished.

Fay Leavy served on the Library Board of Trustees from January 1982 to January 1992. During that time she served five years as vice president and two years as secretary. She was also a founding member of the Friends of the Bryant Library. "Fay meant a great deal to the Bryant Library family," said Library Director Cathy Mealing. "Through her vision and leadership as a trustee and friend, she played a key role in shaping the Bryant Library into the community resource that it is today," she said.

Fay Leavy was born in Brooklyn on March 17, 1916. She grew up in the Bronx where she attended Evander Childs High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at Hunter College and earned a master's degree at Columbia University Teachers College. She worked as an elementary school teacher in the New York City Public School system. Throughout her life, she remained a passionate advocate for public school and adult education.

Fay and Morton Leavy were married in 1941 and moved to East Hills in 1953. Fay immediately became active in both community and school affairs. She was president of the East Hills School PTA and CCPA and active in the Roslyn High School PTA. She was a longtime member of the Roslyn Public Schools Adult Education Advisory Committee and served as chairperson in the late 1980s to early 1990s.

In addition to her public service activities, Fay was known for the literary decision groups she led at the library and for other community organizations. Her lectures earned her a devoted following throughout Nassau County. She taught adult education classes at C.W. Post and Hofstra University and continued to lead discussion groups until the time of her death.

She is survived by daughters, Annette and Jane; their husbands, Jack Muraskin and Peter Isakoff; grandsons, David Muraskin, 22, Nick Isakoff, 21; granddaughter Emma Isakoff, 17; her sister Aviva Crown; and her devoted companion Alba Hernandez. Her husband Mort, an entertainment lawyer, died three years ago.

Donations in Fay's memory can be made to the Friends of Bryant Library, 2 Paper Mill Rd., Roslyn, NY 11576.
