After several long sessions, the Roslyn School District Board of Education has come up with a budget that will be put to a vote on Tuesday, June 20.
The initial budget was defeated on the May 16 election by a 1,928 to 1,764 vote. State law mandates that Tuesday, June 20 is the date when all second votes on school budgets must take place.
According to school district officials, the revised budget will total $85,400,446. In crafting a new budget, the BOE approved $1,409,100 in reductions from the old budget.
The revised budget will contain a 6.12 percent increase from last year's budget, as compared to the 7.87 percent increase included in the defeated budget.
In addition, the proposed tax levy will increase by 7.22 percent as compared to the 9.14 percent increase in the defeated budget. School officials said that the average estimated tax increase would be 7.85 percent, compared to 9.79 percent in the original proposed budget.
School district officials listed up to 18 budget items in which the BOE considered reductions.
Adjustments in the new budget include the budget vote annual meeting ($45,000); summer tuition ($40,000); BOCES services ($50,000); unallocated insurance, a premium reduction ($63,000); clubs and activities at the High School ($48,869); clubs and activities at the Middle School ($1,731); field trips ($25,000); and furniture and equipment ($50,000). The latter items will be implemented on a district wide basis.
Reductions include two contingent teaching positions ($180,000); clerical positions in the administration offices ($80,000); supplies on a district wide basis ($100,000); two teachers, from, respectively, East Hills and Harbor Hills ($170,000); a special education teacher at the High School ($85,000); and a speech teacher ($42,500).
Eliminations in the proposed budget include: The FLES elementary foreign language program ($396,000); and a security vehicle ($20,000).
In addition, the district's summer program will be reduced to half day. That will result in $80,000 in savings.
Finally, the title of the High School Assistant Principal will be changed to that of "Dean." Savings will total $32,000.
School district officials added that while these savings total $1,509, 100, the BOE also increased the allocation for the contract for a new superintendent by $100,000, yielding total net reductions of the before-mentioned $1,409,100.
On Tuesday, June 20, the budget vote will take place at Roslyn High School, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
School district residents wishing to vote by absentee ballot, can complete the application for such a ballot, date and sign it and return it as soon as possible by mail or person to: District Clerk, Roslyn Public Schools, P.O.
