The Mineola fifth and sixth grade lacrosse team cruised to victory by beating Commack 5 to 0. The Mineola Chiefs dominated Commack by playing perhaps their best game of the season. The Chiefs completely dominated Commack in every aspect of the game. It started with a suffocating defense that only allowed Commack seven shots on goal. Controlling the defensive area was Bobby Dwyer (four groundballs), Matt DePalma (four groundballs), Nick O'Conner, Chris Shanahan and Glen Peters. Backing them up with great goal tending was Tevin Carlo (three saves) and Nick Miller (four saves). This game was the first shutout of their careers.
Offensively, the main reasons the Chiefs controlled this game and the ball was by winning the face-offs. With Brian Gaffney and Brian Ehrhardt going 7-0, they managed to keep the possessions in favor of Mineola. Once again to start the game Brian Gaffney passed the ball to Brian Ehrhardt who then fired a blistering shot into the back of the cage for a 1-0 Mineola lead. In the middle of the third quarter, Middie Joe Murray came down the right side and made a beautiful pass to Tevin Carlo, who then finished the play with a rocket shot that beat the goalie on his stick side in the upper corner of the cage to make the score Mineola 4 and Commack 0.
At midpoint of the fourth quarter, Brian Ehrhardt fed Brian Gaffney who then finished off the scoring with a blast that he deposited behind the Commack goalie. Other stars on offense for the Chiefs were middies Jeff Dennehy (four groundballs), David Orent (three groundballs), Brent Weisman (six groundballs) and Greg Maisch (two groundballs). On the attack side, who also helped to keep pressure on the Commack defense was John DeMarco (three groundballs), Nick Miller (four groundballs), and Ray "Slash" Baiewalter (two groundballs). The Chiefs outshot Commack 25 to 7. This was an awesome display of teamwork shown by the Chiefs. The star players of this game were Bobby Dwyer and Matt DePalma.
The Chiefs won their third game without a loss, setting their record to 3-0-1 for the season. The four reasons for the early season success came from complete domination of the face-off as Brian Ehrhardt and Brian Gaffney go 8-0. A strong defense was led by Bobby Dwyer and Matt DePalma, as well as great goal tending which came from Nick Miller (four saves) and Tevin Carlo (five saves). There was also good ball movement on offense as there was an assist for each goal scored.
Defensively the Chiefs kept pressure on the Great Neck offensive players, limiting them to only 11 shots on goal and most were from poor angles and from way outside the zone. The players behind this strong defensive effort are Bobby Dwyer (five groundballs), Matt DePalma (three groundballs), Chris Shanahan and Nick O'Connor.
Offensively, the Chiefs played as a team with good ball movement which led to six goals. Brian Ehrhardt had two goals, two assists (seven groundballs), Brian Gaffney had two goals, two assists (nine groundballs), Joe Murray had one goal, one assist (three groundballs), Ray Baiewalter had one goal (three groundballs) and Tevin Carlo had one assist (three groundballs). Other middies involved with this win were Brent Weisman (four groundballs), David Orent (four groundballs) and Greg Maisch (two groundballs). Attackmen Nick Miller (three groundballs) and John DeMarco (two groundballs) also contribuated to this strong offensive effort. This was yet another good win for the Chiefs this season.
