Dani Kline is one of the two incumbents running for re-election to the Roslyn Board of Education. As with her rivals to the BOE, Ms. Kline has delivered her own statement of candidacy to The Roslyn News, which reads as follows:

"I am a current member of the Roslyn Board of Education and am running for re-election on May 16, for the same reasons I ran two years ago - because I believe passionately in delivering educational excellence to all our students within our budgetary means.

"I am proud of my record. I helped initiate curriculum changes and program reviews by establishing the board's Curriculum and Instruction Committee. I advocated for an evaluation of programs serving students with special needs, and supported the expansion of enrichment programs without increasing costs. I championed educational innovation and creativity as evidenced by my support of advanced educational technology and an enhanced foreign language lab. As a committee member on Adult Education, the Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund, and the Coalition Against Substance Abuse, I focused on delivering quality educational services to the different constituencies in our district. As board liaison, I chaired the Capital Improvement Committee, which oversees the repair and improvement of our buildings. Utilizing recovered funds, this committee has initiated safety and code repairs for our students.

"During my term the board successfully completed an audit of our transportation department, which led to increasing the efficiency of our bus system. Finally, I was an active participant in interviewing and selecting our new administrators.

"At the beginning of my term, we as a board agreed on the importance of initiating financial controls. Together we established the Budget Advisory Committee and the Citizen's Audit Advisory Committee - committees which are now mandated by the state to help review expenditures, procedures, policies and the allocation of district funds.

"My priorities, if re-elected, will be: (1) To work with all key personnel to develop a cutting edge educational vision. (2) To continue to fulfill my fiduciary responsibility by creating sound budgets and implementing internal controls throughout the district. (3) To champion the needs of each student, whether gifted or in need of remediation, whether part of the vocal minority or silent majority. (4) To remain responsive to parent and community concerns and accessible to all members of the Roslyn School District. (5) To support and work cooperatively with school board members, administrators, teachers and staff.

"My experience on the current board, coupled with my 20+ years at Viacom managing budgets in excess of $100 million and my academic training in education, have prepared me well for another board term. My training in education, as well as being the mother of two current Roslyn students, enables me to understand our day-to-day educational challenges. My corporate background has provided me with the skills to negotiate and facilitate cooperation among disparate points of view. More than anything, I believe in the importance of collaboration.

"We have a number of key initiatives which must be accomplished in the next three years. These include the hiring of a Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents of Business and Human Resources. We must manage the budget in order to contain costs in the face of increasing student enrollment, decreased state financial support, and rising health care costs. We must continue to ensure that students are provided with an educational environment that enables them to meet their potential, and best prepares them for life beyond our high school.

"I believe that it is my privilege to serve as an elected representative of our district," Ms. Kline concluded. "I will continue to encourage community input and involvement so that I can best serve as your representative to our educational system."

On the May 16 election, Ms. Kline will be contested for one of the three BOE seats. The three other candidates are Ronald Smith, David Seinfeld, and Jeff Borowick, who like Ms. Kline, is also an incumbent BOE member.
