Last Thursday night, the Roslyn School District Board of Education approved their 2006-07 budget for a vote, one that will be held May 16.
The budget, which stands at $86,809,546, represents a 7.87 percent increase over last year's budget. The vote on approving the budget was 6-1, with board member Meryl Ben-Levy Waxman casting the lone nay vote.
Stanley Stern, BOE president, said that the district's two previous budgets included increases that were less than half of what the proposed budget represents. Last year's budget, for instance, called for a 3.14 percent increase.
Stern called this year's proposed budget, "a true education budget," one designed to "improve the quality of education in Roslyn."
In addition, the BOE has set the dollar amount of a proposed capital project improvement proposition at $4,112,000. The BOE, Stern said, has not completed a final draft of the wording of the proposition, but it expects to do so by the end of April.
If approved, the funding, Stern added, would be used for various renovation projects, including safety and code improvements, masonry work, door and window replacements, plus the upgrading of all of the athletic fields in the school district.
The proposition, along with the budget, will be on the May 16 ballot. On that day, residents in the Roslyn School District will also be voting to fill three seats on the BOE. Incumbents who are up for re-election are Dani Kline and Jeff Borowick. So far, the challengers include Ronald Smith and David Seinfeld. Maryanne Combs, whose trustee position is also up for re-election, will not seek another term on the BOE.
In other news, the BOE has moved to the "second level" in its search for a district superintendent. The BOE, Stern said, is now interviewing the final candidates for that position.
In addition, the BOE has accepted the resignation of David Gutmann, the assistant principal of Roslyn High School, who is leaving the district to serve as a principal of another high school.
Also at the April 6 meeting, a number of administrators and teachers received tenure appointments. The administrators included Regina Colardi, William Esner, Dorothy McHugh, and Edward Salina.
Educators receiving tenure are: Joseph Aucone, Karina Baez, Renee Calabrese, Stephanie Ditta, Tara Fleming, Kimberly Flynn, Orit Guriel, Thomas Kaufman, Shannon Kenniff, Monica Manzi, Patrick Patterson, Karen Perelmuter, Michelle Salerno, Kimberly Shapiro, Dane Solomon, and Constantine Stamidis.
