The works of Roslyn native Daniel Dorff will be featured at a Long Island Composers Alliance concert, one that will take place on Sunday, April 9 at the Bryant Library.

Dorff's composition, "9 Walks Down 7th Avenue," a variation for flute and piano, will be performed.

The Long Island Composers Alliance is dedicated to sponsoring works of resident composers. Currently in its 34th year, it has sponsored hundreds of concerts in the metropolitan area. The April 9 concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Helen Glannon Room of the library.

A native of Roslyn and a graduate of Roslyn High School, plus Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania, Daniel Dorff received early prominence at age 18 when he won First Prize in the Aspen Music Festival's annual composers' competition.

Since then, his compositions have been performed by orchestras and symphonies throughout the country, including those in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Louisville, Indianapolis, Detroit, Chicago, and St. Louis.

In addition, his music has been commissioned four times by the Philadelphia Orchestra's education department, and commissioned twice by the Minnesota Orchestra's Kinder Konzert series, which has performed his music over 150 times.

Other commissions have come from the Colorado Symphony's Up Close and Musical series, the Sacramento Symphony, Young Audiences, Ithaca College School of Music, Haddonfield Symphony, Network for New Music, the National Flute Piccolo Committee, and Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia. Dorff has also created arrangements for such renowned musicians as Sir James Galway, Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fame, and the singer and composer Lisa Loeb.

While receiving his degree at Penn, Dorff served as a Teaching Fellow at that university. In 1996, he was named Composer-in-Residence for the Haddonfield Symphony, where he also played bass clarinet from 1980 through 2002.

Dorff currently works as an editor for Theodore Press Company, a Philadelphia-based firm that is also a major music publisher. Dorff is a sought-after expert on music engraving and notation, having lectured at many colleges as well as Carnegie Hall.

His recent commissions and premieres include a piano concerto for Jeffrey Biegel to be performed in Carnegie Hall in June 2007, the composition August Idyll for flutist Julie Martyn-Baker, and new works for young listeners commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra's education department and by the ACF Community Partners commission for the Auricolae ensemble and Strings for Schools.

Dorff's popular Sonatine de Givery has been recently released on a Crystal CD. The Susquehanna Symphony premiered his Pachelbel's Christmas in December 2005, and in January 2006, the Eau Claire, Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce presented an all-Dorff orchestral concert for young listeners, including the opera Stone Soup. The Haddonfield Symphony has recorded an all-Dorff CD to be released on Bridge Records later in 2006. Several of Dorff's works will be performed at the 2006 annual convention of the National Flute Association.

As with many artists who grew up in the Roslyn area, Dorff had fond memories of his youth in Roslyn. He praised the school district for encouraging his love for music, while also remembering the hours spent at the North Shore Community Arts Center.

"Roslyn High School really nurtured me," he said. "The teachers at the high school let me write music for the band and orchestra."

Dorff also recalled a funny story that happened when he gave a concert at the library several years ago.

"I wanted to thank my fourth grade teacher, Mildred Gardner," he said. "I told the audience that I wished she was at the concert. Then someone said to me, 'turn around.' And there she was, sitting right behind where I was standing. She was 95 years old at the time."
