The weather couldn't have been better as students, teachers, administrators, parents, and residents of Roslyn all came together on Saturday, Sept. 24 to celebrate the 2005 Roslyn High School homecoming.
The day featured the annual parade down Roslyn Road, plus a marching band performance at the halftime of the game between Roslyn and Clarke High School. Best of all, the Bulldogs prevailed in their game against Clarke, winning by a 40-28 margin.
The game was a thriller, with the lead changing hands no less than five times. At halftime, Clarke held a slim 13-12 lead. Going into the fourth quarter, Roslyn led 20-13. A 56-yard touchdown run by Damien Estrada padded the Bulldogs lead to 28-13.
However, Clarke came back to tie the score on two touchdown passes. Finally, with two minutes left, Isaih Mitchem scored on a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 34-28 lead. Roslyn then put the game away when Malik Oliver intercepted a pass and ran it back 88 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a solid victory.
Mitchem, Oliver, Estrada, along with senior quarterback Mike McCann accounted for all of the Bulldogs' earlier scoring. Roslyn jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Mitchem's six-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Estrada scored on a six-yard touchdown pass from McCann.
Roslyn's scoring in the third quarter consisted of a four-yard touchdown run by Oliver, followed by a successful two-point conversion as McCann hit Mitchem with a completed pass. The Clark offense kept pace throughout the game, setting the stage for the fourth quarter fireworks.
Last Saturday, the Bulldogs were unable to continue their winning ways, losing to West Hempstead, 35-20, but the homecoming victory has given new life to the football program.
