The Village of Roslyn's annual holiday meter coverings will begin this Monday, Dec. 6 and last until Monday, Jan. 3, 2005.
During that time, parking meters in the village will be covered all in the holiday spirit and also to entice more shoppers to downtown Roslyn.
The resolution was passed by the village's board of trustees at the Nov. 15 public meeting.
In other news, the trustees heard application requests for new businesses, both in the Lumber Road area.
Natural Horizons made a presentation at the Nov. 15 meeting for a special use permit. No action was taken on that request, but the BOT did approve a special use permit for World Karate Enterprise, Inc., which hopes to open a business at 55 Lumber Road.
World Karate now needs a parking variance approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
In addition, the BOT approved an application request from Forest City Daly to construct a two-and-a-half-story office building as a special use in a residential/commercial zoning district that lies within the village's Historic/Scenic Overlay District. The property in question is at the northwest corner of Skillman Street and Bedells Landing Road.
The office building is part of a larger, 11-acre senior living complex, Sterling Glen of Roslyn, that Forest City Daly has been planning to construct in downtown Roslyn for several years now. Some minor construction work on the development has already begun.
Forest City Daly also plans to play a major role in the redevelopment of the Hempstead Harbor waterfront plan, one that will create a waterfront park and promenade. The harborside walk, which will be open to all local residents including those from Sterling Glen, is itself scheduled for completion sometime in 2005.
In addition to receiving approval on the office building, Forest City Daly has agreed to install a left-hand turn arrow on the intersection of Witte Lane and Bryant Avenue. It also will install a "no egress between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. weekdays" sign on its property at the intersection of Bryant Avenue and the egress point from the 50-unit senior apartment building.
Such agreements were part of a larger agreement between the Villages of Roslyn and Roslyn Harbor concerning a traffic study that resulted from the Sterling Glen project.
Sterling Glen of Roslyn, as noted, will be situated on 11 acres overlooking Hempstead Harbor, adjacent to the Village of Roslyn's downtown historic district. The three-story building, located at 67 Bryant Avenue, will feature 160 rental apartments offering a variety of one- and two-bedroom layouts and appointed common areas for recreation and service.
Approximately 40 percent of the apartments will include balconies with waterfront views, and many of the common areas will face the park and harbor.
Sterling Glen of Roslyn was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. The founder, Robert A.M. Stern, is an award-winning architect, teacher and writer who also serves as dean of the Yale School of Architecture. The building, as Sterling Glen officials have long maintained, was planned in accordance with guidelines established by the Village's Historic District Board.
Culpepper, McAuliffe & Meaders, Inc. of Atlanta, GA, architects and interior designers specializing in senior living properties, served as the interior designer for Sterling Glen.
Individual apartments have been planned to offer 650 to 1,300 square feet, which Sterling Glen officials claim is larger than many older senior communities in the area.
Common areas will include a restaurant-style dining room; a café; a state-of-the-art fitness center; a billiards room; a card room; movie theater; and computer center with Internet access.
Situated within walking distance of Roslyn's downtown restaurants and shops, Sterling Glen of Roslyn will provide access for residents and guests to an array of nearby cultural institutions, including the Nassau County Museum of Art, Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, Westbury Music Fair and Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at C.W. Post College.
