The Wheatley School Physical Education Department have announced that Michelle Ritz and Sagar Mehta have been selected as Outstanding Physical Education students. Criteria for their selection were exceptional performance in physical education, scholarship, leadership qualities and service to the Wheatley school community. Michelle and Sagar will be honored for their selection at an awards banquet that will be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The awards program is sponsored by the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Michelle is a dynamic young lady with boundless energy and a wide range of interests. She has been a straight "A" student throughout her high school career and has earned an impressive array of academic honors.
Michelle was a recipient of the Wellesley Book Award, has received recognition in the Long Island Math Fair, Rohm and Haas Science Fair, Long Island Science Congress, won a Gold Medal in the National Latin Exam and she is a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Michelle has been a four-year starter on the Wheatley girls' basketball team, having earned All-Division honors in her sophomore and junior years. During her junior year, Michelle was the division champion in the discus, earning All-County honors in that event.
Sagar holds leadership positions in the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Mathletes and Brainstormers. For the past two years, he has earned All-County honors as a clarinetist; he is a member of the Environmental Action Committee and Student Government, and he volunteers his time to serve as a peer tutor. For the past two years, Sagar has been a national semi-finalist in the Siemens-Westinghouse Science Competition.
