I wish to share a personal memory about Alfred Hicks.

When, two years ago, we started the Victory Garden at East Hills to supply the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen in Hempstead with pesticide and herbicide-free vegetables we went to Mr. Hicks. He assumed we wanted flower arrangements for a fund-raiser.

When he realized that we were actually planting the vegetables ourselves, he not only donated all of the plants, but more than that, the head of this large nursery went around with us to pick out the best varieties for our purpose. He took a personal interest and concern, which I will always remember.
