Not to be a sore loser, but given the fact that the Roslyn Village Board so summarily turned down my recent offer to plant the grounds of the Clock Tower in my husband's memory (and to pay for it, of course), has it occurred to anyone else that the dotty little annuals currently disporting themselves at its foot are badly diminishing the dignity of our historic edifice?

I can't believe that the original designers of the Clock Tower, a distinctly noble structure after all, ever conceived of its lawn---not to mention its cannon---done up in English garden frills. There is an appropriate place for dainty pinks and blues (in street tubs and at bus stops, perhaps), but certainly not fluffing up, and thereby trivializing, a distinguished local landmark.

In light of this, I have to ask, too---given the fact that my proposal was turned down by the Village Board because the public might trip over my far more sedate and appropriate plantings (naturally) and hurt itself - if the Village has since gone on to acquire "Dangerous Dahlia Insurance"? Just a thought.
