Under the leadership of head coach Stephen Heilbrunn, The Wheatley School Varsity Softball team enjoyed a most successful and memorable season. After completing the regular season with a record of 11 wins and 5 losses and finishing in 4th place in its division, the Lady Wildcats brought their "A" game to the playoffs. Three of the regular season losses were by one run, including two games in which we were shutout by identical 1-0 scores. Wheatley scored a total of 120 runs during the regular season while holding opponents to 31 runs.
The regular season record earned Wheatley a third place seed in the Nassau County Class B Playoffs and a first-round game against number two seeded North Shore High School. Behind the pitching of All-County senior pitcher Jessica Sachse and timely hitting of seniors Alicia DeFino and Lauren Ball, Wheatley advanced to the finals with a 7-3 win. The Nassau County finals matched Wheatley against fourth seeded Cold Spring Harbor, upset winner over defending champion Carle Place, in a best two out of three series. With a combination of slick defense, excellent pitching and timely hitting, Wheatley easily defeated the Seahawks with two consecutive wins by scores of 3-2 and 11-1.
The Nassau County title qualified the Lady Wildcats for an appearance in the Southeast Regional/Long Island title game against highly regarded and defending champion Eastport/South Manor High School. After a shaky start in which Eastport/South Manor scored three runs in the first inning, Wheatley settled down to record a most impressive 8 run outburst in the second inning. Ball, who was four for four at the plate for the game, smashed a three-run homerun in the inning and the Lady Wildcats never looked back on their way to an impressive 16-4 victory. Everyone in the starting lineup had a least one hit. DeFino had three hits and scored three runs and Samantha Lynn recorded two hits and also scored three runs.
Since 1997, Wheatley has now won the Southeast Regional/Long Island Championship three times and earned trips to the New York State Softball Final Four. The finals were held at the Clifton Softball Complex, just north of Albany, and the first round game was played in the morning of June 5 against Windsor High School, which was making its first appearance in the State Playoffs. The Wheatley season came to an abrupt halt against a very strong Windsor team. The final score was 9-0. Nevertheless, the Wheatley School Community is proud of the wonderful season the team enjoyed and the positive manner in which team members represented Wheatley. Pitcher Sachse and shortstop DeFino earned All-County honors and catcher Alyssa Saginario was named to the All-Division team. First baseman Ball received All-Conference honors and was named Most Valuable Player for the Nassau County Class B Playoffs. Sachse and DeFino were also named to the All-Tournament State team and All-State honors went to DeFino.
