The Roslyn Public Schools has been notified that it will receive a Magna Award this year from the American School Board Journal in recognition of the Community Service Program at Roslyn High School.
Only twenty-four Magna Awards are given to school districts across the nation annually in recognition of excellent and innovative programs. Roslyn is one of only a handful of districts to have received more than one Magna Award since the awards were first presented in 1996. Roslyn's Gold Card program for senior citizens was recognized in 1998. Only four other districts on Long Island have ever won a Magna Award.
The Community Service Program has attracted considerable attention since its introduction nearly 10 years ago, and Roslyn remains in the minority of districts to have a community service requirement for high school graduation. Roslyn school officials have been invited to present the program to other school districts at national conferences on a number of occasions.
The American School Boards Journal will make a formal announcement of the 2004 Magna Award winners later this winter, and the award will be presented during the National School Boards Association annual conference in March.
