Azzurri Score in Soccer Tourney
In the 4th annual North Hempstead Cup Columbus Weekend tournament, the Albertson Azzurri tied for 1st place in the Boys U-11 division. The tournament consisted of 4 games spread out over 3 days, with the first contest taking place under the lights on the Friday before Columbus Day. The Azzurri opened the tournament against the Great Neck Road Runners, a team that Albertson has been fighting for first place during the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) regular season. Albertson opened the scoring, as Patrick Woods curled in a corner kick to the upper right corner of the net. This shot certainly was the premise for the movie Bend it Like Beckham. Jonathan Matusczak then completed the scoring with an awesome display of power and agility, beating two Great Neck defenders to a loose ball and blasting in a shot from 25 yards out, off the crossbar and into the net. Strong goaltending by Jacob Cooper and rock solid defense let by Kevin Levine, Brandon Rothberg and Jason Bergman held the potent Roadrunner squad scoreless for the first time all year, en route to a 2-0 win.
