Our government proceeded with a war against Iraq that was not necessary. The United Nations was conducting a search for weapons of mass destruction that was efficient and conclusive. Our proceeding with a war resulted in the deaths of over 340 young, innocent American servicemen, British servicemen and thousands of Iraqis as well as causing vast destruction. We had opposition from the United Nations and most member nations for proceeding with the war. The respect and admiration for our country has diminished. Our economy has been and will continue to be adversely affected. Our social and peoples programs have been curtailed. Elected officials and our citizens are strongly divided on the issue.
The acceptable procedure now is to have the United Nations and member nations bring about a democratic government in Iraq and share the costs and manpower necessary for rebuilding the country. It is the only acceptable procedure.
When a dispute arises, a UN representative should meet with both sides to arbitrate and both sides must compromise and cooperate to reach an agreement and they must abide by the agreement reached. Wars should not be the procedure at this stage of our civilization. We must have a more cooperative, respectful, friendlier world.
