    The Long Island Power Authority's 1.1 million electric customers became part of the largest blackout in history when 50 million people lost electric service in the Northeast, portions of Canada and the mid-west on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 4:14 p.m. FULL STORY

  • News: Blackout Triggers Roslyn Water District Response

    The power blackout on Aug. 14 throughout the Northeast instantly activated Roslyn Water District's auxiliary power systems. The response was an automatic transfer to electric power supplied by emergency stand-by generators. Within minutes district personnel established procedures to assure a continuous supply of water to the 17,000 residents and businesses of the district. District Superintendent Richard Passariello reported that "checking procedures were established and maintained throughout the night by district operators and commends the fine work performed by Water Service Supervisor Bernard Murtagh, Maintainer William Pokora and Water Plant Operator Douglas Ford who kept the generators operational and water flowing throughout the night. With an aggregate of 60 years of water supply management between them, they efficiently kept tabs on all elements to assure no loss or interruption of water.   • Sports: Soccer Squad to Compete in State Tourney

    The Albertson Soccer Club will compete in the annual American Ref-Fuel Soccer Tournament, New York State's largest youth soccer tournament with over 340 teams representing approximately 90 clubs. The three-day tournament, now in its 25th year, is hosted by the East Meadow Soccer Club and will be played at up to 12 Nassau County sites on August 23, 24 and 25. FULL STORY

    The Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center's Anne David Dolphin Swim Team is looking to build on its outstanding record of 9-5 this season by seeking new members (ages 5-17) for the 2003-04 season. The Dolphins have a competitive team as well as a development team. FULL STORY
