The Rules Committee of the Nassau County Legislature recently approved a measure to rename a portion of Mineola Avenue in Roslyn Heights as "Langone Brothers Avenue." The street will be named in honor of Peter and Thomas Langone of Roslyn, two emergency workers who perished in the World Trade Center tragedy on September 11, 2001.
"These two men personify courage and bravery," said Craig Johnson, who represents the Roslyn area in the legislature. "Honoring them with a portion of a major road in their home town is a memorial to two men who exhibited the ultimate selflessness that will live on forever."
The Langone brothers were both 20-year veterans of the Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company Number One Fire Department. Peter and Thomas died while performing their full time jobs as emergency workers for the City of New York. Peter, 41, was a firefighter for Engine Company 252 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, while Thomas, 39, was an emergency service police officer for Emergency Squad 10 in Brooklyn.
As a member of Roslyn Rescue, Tom Langone was an assistant chief with the department. He had previously served as a chief of Roslyn Rescue in the early 1990s. Before joining the NYFD, Peter Langone was also a member of the New York City police department.
The stretch of Mineola Avenue that will be renamed is between MacGregor Avenue and Maple Street in Roslyn Heights. The Nassau County Department of Public Works will install noticeable signage along the roadway noting the name-change in honor of these local heroes. The item is expected to pass through the full legislator at their next meeting on Monday, Sept. 8. The new signs will be in place no later than September 11, 2003.
The street name is only one of the many honors to be bestowed posthumously on the Langone brothers. In 2001, the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company established The Langone Brothers Educational Fund, one designed to provide long-term educational assistance to the children of Tom and Peter Langone.
Finally, on Sept. 29, 2002, Roslyn Rescue unveiled a Memorial Plaque to the Langone brothers, one that stands at fire company headquarters on Mineola Avenue. The plaque was donated to the firehouse by the Roslyn Heights Civic Association. Local businesses who assisted in that day's events at Roslyn Rescue included Milo Printing, Pasta Time, Bare Foot Peddler, The Ground Round, Il Sapore, Attilio's, and Matteo's.
