Residents in the Roslyn area will vote this Tuesday, June 3 on local school budgets. In addition to the budgets, there will be votes on board of education candidates. Voters in both the Roslyn and Herricks school districts will also decide on referendums which address transportation and construction issues.

In Roslyn, there will be a referendum on extending modifications to the mileage eligibility limits for school bus transportation for one more year.

The policy was revised several years ago to provide busing for all students K-8 and reduce mileage to 1/2 mile for students in grades 9-12 for the duration of the LIE construction. Reimbursement from New York State will enable the district to continue this modified policy at no additional cost to taxpayers, subject to voter approval.

Meanwhile, in Herricks, voters will determine the fate of a Roof Replacement Project.

Proposition 2 seeks voter approval to authorize, and not exceed, $2,269,319 in taxes, plus a tax to pay interest on a like amount of bonds together with the expenditure of $429,767 available in the Emergency Repair Reserve, to fund the $2,699,106 first phase of the district roof reconstruction projects.

There will be competitive board of education races in both the North Shore and Herricks districts. In North Shore, there are three candidates running for two seats. They are incumbents Julia Brennan and Barbara Palmero and the challenger, Igor Webb.

The Herricks election features four candidates vying for two contested seats. The Herricks candidates are Peter Grisafi, Richard Buckley, David Stollwerk, and Keith DiMarco. In Roslyn, there are no challengers for the three incumbents---Michael Barkan, Maryann Combs, and Pat Schissel---who are up for re-election.

Voters in the Roslyn School District will decide on a 2003-2004 budget of $75,503,051. They will also vote on the Bryant Library's annual budget. For the 2003-2004 fiscal year, the proposed library budget comes to $3,683,825.

Copies of the Roslyn School District budget are available at all Roslyn school buildings, the central administration building and the Bryant Library. For information call the Business Office at 625-6307.

Applications for absentee ballots in the Roslyn district may be obtained by calling the district clerk, Phyllis Barash, at 625-6303 and on line at www.roslynschools.org/code/absentee.htm.

For the Herricks district, absentee ballots can also be obtained at the district clerk's office, located on the second floor of the Herricks Community Center, 999 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park. For any questions, call 248-3121.
