The Roslyn Landmark Society is holding its 43rd annual house tour on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. "If people have ever driven through Roslyn and wondered what the historic houses lining our streets look like on the inside, this is their once-a-year chance to find out," said Landmark Society President Harrison Hunt. "This year's tour includes nine of the architectural gems in Roslyn and Roslyn Harbor."
The nine houses on the tour are the rustic Mott-Magee-Skewes Cottage, which incorporates portions of an early 19th century store and the original Glenwood schoolhouse; the circa 1835 Samuel Dugan, Jr. House; the cozy John Craft House, circa 1858; and the Victorian Rafferty-Craft House, built circa 1890, all on East Broadway. Other Roslyn buildings featured are the charming 20th century home of architect Craig Westergard on Edwards Street and the community's premier architectural treasure, the circa 1680 Van Nostrand-Starkins House, one of the oldest structures in Nassau County, now a museum administered by the Roslyn Landmark Society.
The final three buildings on the tour are located on Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor: Cedarmere, the home of 19th century American poet William Cullen Bryant, now a Nassau County Park which will open its one-of-a-kind Gothic Revival Mill especially for the tour; Springbank, a picturesque mid-19th century cottage with porch which was once owned by Bryant; and the neighboring Stephen and Charles Smith House, built circa 1860.
Admission to the house tour is $17 in advance or $20 on the day of the tour, and includes a copy of the Roslyn Landmark Society's highly detailed, award-winning House Tour Guide. Tickets can be purchased before June 7 at the Roslyn Savings Bank on Old Northern Boulevard and the Bryant Library on Paper Mill Lane, or by calling the Landmark Society at 625-4363. Tickets will be on sale on the day of the tour at the Society's booth in front of the Roslyn Savings Bank from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Please note that children under 12 are not permitted on the tour.
