The Roslyn Booster Basketball Club, Inc. (RBBC) held its third annual open invitation Coaches vs. Coaches Hoops Challenge basketball game on Saturday, March 29, which saw 35 Roslyn booster basketball coaches dust off their "hightops" and in a "role reversal," hit the hardwood in regulation full court games at the Roslyn HS main gym to show off their basketball skills in front of their players. Prior to the start of this game, RBBC Girls seven player and RBBC League "official singer" Sasha Hiller graced the gym with a phenomenal "a capella" rendition of God Bless America which drew a two-minute standing ovation from the entire gym. Due to the unusually large turnout of coaches two games were played simultaneously to allow ample playing time for all participants. After almost two hours, no injuries, a lot of sore bones and many happy faces, these dedicated Roslyn booster basketball coaches vowed to "be back to play in this game next year. ..."
For the first time in RBBC League history, the Boys 8/9 League played a "Booster-Hoopster All-Star Game doubleheader. "These games were played on Saturday, March 29, at the Roslyn HS main gym in front of a packed gym prior to the "Coaches Challenge " game which were the finale to this day's tripleheader action. Approximately 40 Boys 8/9 players went "head to head" in two very exciting games. In the first game, Coach Greif's "East" squad squeaked out a hard-fought, down-to-the-wire 48-46 victory over Coach Hyman's "tall timbers" West squad. This game was a see-saw battle from the opening whistle and pitted the much-touted "run and gun" offense of the East squad against the pound-it-out "low post scoring" offense of the West squad. The game was decided with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter when the "East" squad converted a baseline jump-shot and deflated the West squad's last second in-bounds pass.
In the second game, Coach Grant's "run all day" North squad defeated Coach Reiner's "long-range bombers" South squad 69-61 in what spectators described as one of the best "three-point shooting clinics" they had seen in a long time. This game was a see-saw battle until the fourth quarter when the North squad was able to extend out to a nine-point lead on the strength of five consecutive three-point shots and a last ditch comeback effort by the South squad fell short.
Seven RBBC executive board members received "Exemplary Service" plaques in recognition of their outstanding volunteer commitments during the 2002-2003 season at the RBBC 's April 8 board meeting.
