Regarding councilmanic districts, I agree completely with Joe Galante and letter writer Thomas Sobczak Jr. that this form of representation would be unfair and unjust.
Republican voter registration in the Town of North Hempstead is roughly 3 to 2 in favor of the Republicans. This means that no Democrat stands a chance to win unless he has Republican support. This also is the reason why no Democratic town supervisor had been elected between 1917 and 1989. During all those years the town council was usually comprised of an entirely Republican board. Very rarely was a Democrat successful in obtaining a seat on the town council.
It was due to Republican mismanagement of the Port Washington landfills and their proposals to build gigantic incinerators, which would necessitate importing garbage, that Republican voters finally cast their ballots for a Democrat, who then was successful in bringing more Democrats to the council to enact his programs.
Registered Republican voters have obviously decided that it is to their advantage to elect Democrats, since they have always had the choice to elect Republican candidates anywhere in the Town of North Hempstead. Dividing the Town of North Hempstead into six districts will be unnecessarily costly, and will also result in deliberate gerrymandering of districts.
I believe we should retain our current at-large voting systems, as well as our current four councilpersons. It has worked for the benefit of all.
