The Town of North Hempstead plans more construction work in Searingtown---but it has nothing to do with sidewalks or trees.

At the February public meeting, the town board adopted a resolution authorizing improvements to Searingtown Pond Park. The Department of Public Works project also calls for the same improvements at Ridders Pond Park in Manhasset.

In addition, the town has secured the services of A. James de Bruin & Sons LLP to prepare the plans and specifications of the improvement project. The town will use money from its Environmental Legacy Fund to rehabilitate the Searingtown Pond.

In time, the town will also procure the services of an engineering firm to design barriers, catch basins, and other devices to improve the water quality of the pond and to do plantings that will keep undesirable mammals, such as geese, away from the area.

Last winter, the board approved bids for Project No. 01-03, which entails the reconstruction of numerous residential drives in Searingtown, one that also calls for some tree removal. A recently completed sidewalk project also resulted in tree removal. When controversy over that project erupted, town officials said that there hadn't been a major repaving of the roads in Searingtown for the past 20 years. Officials also said that local residents had lobbied for a renovation project. But they also agreed to be more communicative with local residents and to notify them whenever renovation projects were taking place in their neighborhood.

In other town news, the board approved a resolution authorizing John M. Spellman as attorney for the Albertson Water District. Dvirka & Bartilucci Engineering was named as engineers for that same water district. Spellman is also the attorney for the Village of Roslyn. The board also announced that State Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli has secured a $250,000 state grant to help defray the cost for the installation of lights at the athletic fields at the Harbor Links Complex. Such fields will be made available for use by local school districts. The board approved a resolution allowing the town to execute an agreement with the state to finalize the funding.
