The Roslyn High School boys varsity basketball team saw their season come to a disappointing end last Saturday as the Bulldogs were defeated by Bethpage in the first round of the Class B tournament, 36-31.
The Bulldogs were led by Ronny Koenig who scored 14 points. Late in the fourth quarter, a Koenig field goal put the Bulldogs within one point of Bethpage. However, a basket by Glenn Palilla gave Bethpage some breathing room and they held on to win the game.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs put on an inspired second half run which allowed them to make the playoffs. Starting with a 41-31 win over Roosevelt on Jan. 22, the Bulldogs won four of seven games, including three straight wins to close the season. On Feb. 3, the Bulldogs defeated Plainedge 52-37. Two days later, they topped Lynbrook, 56-42. On Feb. 12, the Bulldogs ended the regular season with a convincing 65-46 victory over Valley Stream North.
Throughout the run, the team's offensive attack was led by Koenig and Mike Mantel. In the win over Plainedge, Koenig scored 21 points, while Mantel added 15. In the Lynbrook victory, Koenig had 24 points, while in the win over Valley Stream South, Mantel had career-high 23 points.
