Last Friday, Jan. 8, the Roslyn Bulldogs boys varsity basketball squad came from behind to defeat Plainedge, 43-39. The victory, scored at a home game at Roslyn High School, salvaged a week that saw the Bulldogs lose to both Bethpage and Jericho.
The Bulldogs outscored Plainedge by five points in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Ronny Koenig led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Both Derrick Kaye and Michael Mantel chipped in with eight points each.
On Monday, Jan. 6, the Bulldogs lost an away game at Bethpage, 59-36. No Bulldog player scored in double figures, even though the team did hit four three-pointers.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Bulldogs dropped a home game with Jericho, 51-47. Roslyn-Jericho matchups always have the intensity of a strong rivalry, but this was the first time the two teams met since Roslyn upset the previously-unbeaten Jericho squad in last year's Class B semi-final playoff game. The Bulldogs overcame an eight-point deficit in the third quarter to take a 39-38 lead going into the final frame. However, Jericho staged a comeback of their own to eke out the four point victory. Ronny Koenig led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Michael Mastro paced Jericho, scoring 26 points.
With three weeks left in the regular season, the Bulldogs have a 6-4 record overall and a 2-2 record in Class B conference play. Upcoming games include an away game on Jan. 17 at Valley Stream North, a home game on Jan. 22 at Roosevelt and an away game on Friday, Jan. 24 against Bethpage.
